The Hillside Apartment

Located in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels, the project is a renovation for a family with a 723 sqft three-bedroom unit. The apartment faces east and benefits from morning sunlight exposure. Situated on a quiet hillside street with low traffic, the location provides a calm living environment despite being within the dense urban context of Hong Kong.

The owner seeks a warm and coherent space, contrasting with the norm in Hong Kong where storage spaces often lead the design. From the beginning, the project established a clear principle that the inhabitants should feel that they are living in a home rather than a space surrounded by storage units.

The design ensures that from all angles there will not be more than one set of cabinets visible. To achieve this, the cabinets are located strategically and designed with strong proportion and alignment, allowing them to form a minimalist geometry within the overall design while still providing sufficient storage space. Architectural elements are emphasized to create contrast within the space, with bold walnut surfaces set against light textured walls. The result is a simple yet coherent and timeless interior.
